Severe Earthquake Shakes Talca

March 6, 2010 A week ago, the earthquake that shook central Chile was 500 times stronger than the one that hit Haiti.
Harvard High School AFS student Alvaro Lillo's
hometown of Talca, Chile near the epicenter was devastated and cut-off from aid and assistance.
His family members and family home have survived the most severe earthquake in the world since 1900. But an additional 170+ aftershocks (some as strong as the Haitian earthquake) are an hourly occurrence. His own home has had no electricity or water and the neighborhood is guarded at night by police to discourage break-ins to the dark houses.
A large percentage of the city has crumbled, hundreds of people have died, friends have lost their homes, streets he walked on to play soccer or get groceries a few months ago, are gone. The damage is so great from the quakes and the tsunamis that aid is difficult to get to the people. They are suffering a huge crisis.
